Faces
from the Past
It’s amazing what you can do with PhotoShop. My sister asked me if I could rescue this old photo of her with grandad (aka ‘Pop-pop’), a photo that looked like it had been screwed into a ball many years ago and then left in the sun. The trickiest part of removing the folds was knowing which ones in this scanned image were paper creases and which were creases in Pop-pop’s face - I mean, I couldn’t go too mad with the smudge and blur tools, now could I?
I never really knew Pop-pop - he died when I was still a baby, but I recognise his smile in many people around me.

What’s going on here? (part 2)
Favicons are tricky little buggers at times. In IE there is a known fault whereby a favourite that you save might display the favicon for a while, but soon enough it disappears (when you clear the cache). But I spotted a weird one this morning - the favicon showing in the address bar of Firebird is different from the one shown in the tab.
![]()
I created the favicon, so I know that the file never had a ‘wireframe’ mode! Perhaps it’s a Firebird glitch (possibly a temporary one)? Whatever, it’s got me stumped …
What’s going on here?
In Mac OS X Finder, the finder
displays the full file name, but in the FTP program (Hefty FTP) it’s concatenated and mangled. I’ve noticed a similar thing happen in Dreamweaver too.

Now, I could simply use smaller filenames - but only on new files created; I can’t change existing ones without repercussions. Added to this is the fact that the scripting on the page (in Accessify) converts the filename to something readable in the breadcrumb trail, so if I did use small filenames, I’d get something like this.
Is there a solution for this?
Sometimes Google gets it wrong
I was searching for a WAV to MP3 convertor that runs on Mac OS X and allows
batch processing. It’s interesting what Google thought would be the most appropriate advert to serve up for me:
Oh so twee
A little while ago, I spotted some new signs that appeared along the entrance of the place I work at, Nationwide Building Society’s headquarters in Swindon. By the grass verges were little signs of:
- a duck
- a rabbit
- a pedestrian crossing
Now, presumably you can’t easily miss a person crossing the road but the other signs were put there as warnings: "Cute duck might be sitting in road", "Watch out or it’s rabbit stew for dinner!". These signs make me smile every time I drive in and probably make visitors go "Ahhhh, that’s cute!" but that’s nothing compared to what appeared on the front of the building last week:

Now, just look at the size of the doors, then check out the size of the pink butterfly - it’s a good six feet tall. Heck, if the butterfly is that big, just how big are the flowers and the bees? Well, to answer your question the flower is three stories tall while the bee is man (or woman) sized:

I do enjoy my job, and it’s a great building to work in … but just how far can we go on the cuteness factor, I wonder?!
Will Apple Computer Buy its own Record Label?
Speculation abound regarding Apple’s (possible) plans to move even further into the music industry, says Fox News.
It’s a busy time for Apple Computer. Its iPod portable music player is the Walkman of the millennium. The accompanying iTunes program is resolving long-standing disputes in the record industry. Apple is reportedly even looking into buying a record company. But there’s a wrinkle.
It’s the Beatles. They haven’t recorded together since 1969. Two of the four original members are, quite sadly, deceased. And yet the Beatles stand to pose a big problem for Apple Computer.
They certainly seem to be knocking on the door of Apple Corp, The Beatles’ record label, presumably while music lawyers frantically draw up paperwork for a big legal battle. This one could be a biggie …
Redesign stalled
Apologies to anyone whose sites I used to link to in the Blog roll - it’s been removed as part of a re-structure, but it will reappear when I’m done. The reason for moving URLs - my old host didn’t run ASP, and as such making site-wide changes was a major pain; I’ve moved to the same server as Accessify because I can use include statements in the code (if you’re even remotely interested).
The other reason it’s not completed yet is that I’ve been on hols (more to follow) and am in between computers (half on old PC laptop, half on new Mac Powerbook), so it’s difficult to finish this up right now! Expect a post about my switch experiences soon.
Currently listening to ‘Ya Mama’ by The Pharcyde. Ah, they don’t make ‘em like that any more.
Awwwwwwww, ya mom is so fat (how fat is she?)
We rode up on her back to get some burgers from Wendy’s
and her skates went flat; I got stuck in her butt crack
They thought I was lost but I was caught by the G-strap
Heaven forbid a giant fart would give way
Cause that would blow me round the world in a day
We drove into the drive-in and she didn’t have to pay
because we dressed her up to look just like a Chevrolet
Go
Slug Go!

Yes it’s cruel, but goddamn it if this isn’t one of the funniest things I’ve seen … well since yesterday’s Primate Programming Inc site. Can the slug find his way out? Can he get out to the leaf that awaits him at the end? Did someone really sit there and watch his sloooooooooow progress? Find out here: Slug Maze Experiment
Graffiti is (are) Art
Did you know that graffiti is actually a plural? Well, it is … but anyway … on to the point of this post - how nice is this site?
Pay peanuts, you get monkeys
One word - superb.
