Learning for 4-Year-Olds
Watching early-morning television with my partner’s 4-year-old nephew. His language is a 70:30 ratio of Chinese:English and we’re watching the Fimbles. The colourful plushies are dancing around singing an old nursery rhyme favourite:
Hey diddle diddle,
The cat and the fiddle,
The cow jumped over the moon. The little dog laughed,
To see such fun,
And the dish ran away with the spoon.
Now, forgive me if I’m wrong, but how the hell is this going to help him learn? And people complain about new TV programs for kids not teaching them properly. Well, it doesn’t help looking back to old nursery rhymes like this, for sure!
