Dear John (Dvorak)
I only know two things about Dvorak:
- He was a composer of some note (although I’d much rather listen to The Prodigiy)
- There’s a keyboard layout/design called Dvorak named after its inventor
Recently, another Dvorak appeared on my radar. He wasn’t anyone I’ve heard of before - not my kind of reading - but he spat the dummy over CSS in such a way that us ‘experts’ went on a bit of a rampage. Well, as much as you can with words on a screen. Hardly pitchforks and torches stuff. Anyway, I digress. The only thing I could suggest was that this Mr Dvorak was doing a bit of composing using a weird Dvorak keyboard when he’s used to QWERTY layout. Well, he wasn’t making total sense, it seemed.
So, Molly offered 2 days of training gratis, and now it’s my turn to offer something for Mr Dvorak (well, me Jeff, Dan and Colly collectively). We’re giving him a copy of Beginning CSS Web Development followed by Pro CSS Techniques (once we’ve finished writing it - I’m halfway through my allotted 4 chapters!). Let’s hope it does the job, eh?
Now, I’ve got a problem with the Aston Martin DB9. It’s a rubbish car, isn’t it? Yeah? Are you listening, Aston Martin? I know a way that you could convince me I am wrong …

[…] So, John: Seeing as it is purely a matter of education (or lack thereof), after consulting with Simon, Jeff, and Ian, it has been decided to provide to you, free of charge, copies of our most recent books: Beginning CSS Web Development (Simon’s new book, and which I had the pleasure of Technical Editing) and Pro CSS Techniques (by the “3 CSS Musketeers” Jeff, Ian and myself). When read in order (starting with the “beginners” book is a safe bet) these will give you all the knowledge you need to overcome your deep-seeded fear and loathing of CSS. […]

Also he’s (John) had a few redesigns done for him http://westciv.typepad.com/dog_or_higher/2006/07/dvorak_reloaded.html and http://www.stuffandnonsense.co.uk/archives/way_too_many_cooks_dvorak_special.html
p.s yeah that DB9 its rubbish, I wouldn’t have one given (though I’d like the chance to turn it down)

I used to work on a podcast where John Dvorak was one of the regular guests… you sort of got used to him winding everyone up. In fact, he admitted he sometimes rants off about something just to annoy the hell out of people, so he gets more airtime and more column inches. He did it 6 months ago when he declared that Apple were going to drop Mac OS X and move to Windows… Guess his “ratings” were down and he needed to attract a new audience… San Francisco is all about “the numbers” :)
