Adding to del.icio.us - but not via del.icio.us?

Posted in lazyweb by Lloydi on the September 20th, 2007

This may seem like a bizarre question, but someone out there might have a suggestion on this one.

I can’t add pages to del.icio.us at my place work because the login page is blocked - actually anything beginning https is, unless you can make a business case for it to be unlocked (and del.icio.us doesn’t really classify as a ‘business critical’ tool). So I’ve gotten into the habit of routinely emailing interesting URLs to my personal email address and then adding the pages to del.icio.us at home in the evening in a batch. Frankly, it’s a pain.

I was thinking of using del.icio.us on accessify for adding quick links to useful stuff to avoid having to do a full post about it (which always seems like overkill) and thought that with all the WordPress plugins that there might be one that would allow me to add directly from within WordPress - it’s my server, and hence the wp-admin side of things, is not blocked for me at work. Alas, despite the range of plugins, there does not seem to be one that allows this kind of functionality.

So can anyone suggest another way around this annoying little problem?

Presumably you’ve tried using the Firefox Delicious plugin?

Alternatively, the Delicious API is pretty simple, I’m sure there will be PHP scripts around somewhere that you can stick up on accessify and use to remotely add bookmarks.

“Presumably you’ve tried using the Firefox Delicious plugin?”

I used to use that … but the same problem exists - logging in to my account from desktop, be that by web page or plugin involves going to the secure login that’s blocked.

But if I am using something on one of my domains and the login is done directly via my server to del.icio.us (I hope that I’m saying that correctly), then I don’t have the same issue … I think?

This was suggested as a possibility

Yeah, you should be able to post via a proxy on your own server.

Ian, I’ve just written something that will do this if you want me to send you the script?

@dotjay - Sure, yeah! That would be brilliant, although if you wanna put it online it’d be good to link it from here (to help anyone else who might search for solution and stumble across this post). Thanks for doing it, that’d be great.

Sorry, Ian. I’m still waiting to hear back from del.icio.us about this, but it seems their API gets very angry with posts by proxy. The API says that if you post more than once a second, you will get booted out for a bit - “throttled”. Seemingly, that requirement is a lot more severe than it says it is - I’ve been playing nice and the API will no longer accept posts from my domain. It definitely works - I’ve managed to post to my del.icio.us account via a URL on dotjay.co.uk - but just not sure how usable a proxy might be to you. I’ll let you know if I hear anything.
